This page will be an occasional log of my trips to the park. Which park? Lake Seminole park. It's right behind my house and I'm there frequently, walking for my health. I've been feeling pretty healthy lately, but I still go to the park anyway for long walks as often as I can.
The background image on this page is that of a Great Blue Heron about to take flight. The original image is quite different. These magnificent birds can almost always be seen in the park, along with many other kinds of critters.

The names of the ponds shown below are not in any way official. I gave them these names since they seemed to have had none. It was the least I could do.
Turns out that they do have rather uncreative names. L1, L2, L3 & L4. I'll stick with the unofficial names.

I had no idea how big this page would turn out when I started it over two years ago. The walking alone in the beginning took effort enough. Once I started adding photos of the days walks, the page just bloomed into unmanageable size. As of the end of August, 2006, there are around 5000 pictures of the park on this site.
Some (not all) of the photographs on the following linked pages are actually suitable for framing, and are available in various sizes, some of them as big as 16" X 20" (only a few of those so far). As displayed on the site, most are approximately 5" X 7".

Lake Seminole County Park, in central Pinellas County, Florida.
Latitude: 27.85278; Longitude: -82.77556; The aerial (satellite) picture is from the U.S. Geological Survey from pre-2003 (actually around 1995). I can tell because my neighbor has a cage over his pool now. The paved recreation trail is two miles long with an optional one mile cut-off. The ponds are filled and surrounded with wild life, there are uncountable birds, and it's a great feeling just to walk through it. The trip to get to the park from home takes about two minutes. The gate opens at about 7 A.M. and there are frequently quite a few people in there early in the morning to avoid the mid-day heat. Picnicers & boaters fill the place up as the day goes on. Closing time depends on the season, but generally it closes at dusk. Here's a schematic map thoughtfully provided by Pinellas County. |

Walked a little over an hour today. Temperature in the low 80's and a light breeze. Strong sun with few clouds. Got quite a few shots of what I think is a second year Bald Eagle. Not as crisp as I'd like but it's easy to see what it is. Definitely a Bald Eagle, probably second year. The pictures are here. Walked about 3 miles.

Walked an hour and a half again. Another gorgeous day. Low 70's, nice sun and a light breeze. Took some pictures, mostly of plant life, with a 50mm f1.8 lens. Wouldn't you know, there was an excellent opportunity to get a Red-shouldered Hawk, but had to settle for shots like these. Walked about 2¾ miles.

Walked just short of 2 hours. Can't get many more days like this one. High 70° area, light breeze, and nice strong sunlight. Nice for picture taking! Lots of different birds out today. I think this is a young Red-tailed Hawk caught between tree limbs. Lots of pictures of that one. Other flying birds caught in the act are an Osprey, a Great Blue Heron, and last but not least, a Bald Eagle. And almost a great picture. Walked about 4 miles.

Walked just short of an hour and a half. Took some pictures. This GBH was gathering twigs to help build a nest. This nest (a different one) has chicks in it. Very noisy ones at that. There seem to be quite a few GBH nests in the park this year, compared to last year when there were hardly any. Seemed like a good day to the gators too. Here's a 4½ footer, and here's an eight footer that I first noticed while watching some ducks. Walked about 3¾ miles.

Walked an hour today dodging raindrops all the way. Made it back without getting too wet and took some surprisingly good pictures considering the low light. Today was overcast, a little breezy and about 75°. This is a good time of year for migrants passing through and today I got a couple of Blue-winged Teals. Quite a few pictures today.
