Connecticut Yankees Drum & Bugle Corps

I woke up this morning thinking about the old, old song, "Blue Skies".
Who knows why;
things like this just seem to happen on a semi-regular basis. Even more
incredibly,
the version I was thinking of is one that that was done by the
Connecticut Yankees
Drum & Bugle Corps of Stratford, CT. This photo
album
(circa 1960-1975) that I found after a brief search, brought back the
memories. They
were a close order marching band, apparently now defunct, that competed
with similar
(but, in my opinion, inferior) marching bands across Connecticut and
maybe even further.
I don't actually know the extent of those competitions. It was so neat
to go watch
those bands compete that I actually started to watch them practice too.
The feeling
you got when that band turned and started marching toward you, and at
just that moment started blasting "Blue Skies" was indescribable. As
luck would have it
I found a 1960 rendition of "Blue Skies" and amazingly enough it's done
by the Connecticut
Yankees. The sound isn't all that great (sounds here like a high school
band actually), but
remember, the recording facilities were probably a 1950's style tape
recorder held by somebody sitting on bleachers being buffeted by a 30
mph, 55° wind. Crank up the speakers and listen to the
.mp3 here. Of
course, now I'll never be able to get the song out of my head.
Hearing it live and in person was nothing short of goose-bump awesome.
just a thought. bill brower, 25-feb-2004
